How a Physical Therapist Can Help You

REDUCING YOUR RISK OF FALLS

DTP physical therapists develop and utilize custom tailored exercise programs proven in research and clinical practice to decrease the risk of falls in older adults.

INCREASING GAIT SPEED

Walking speed has been referred to by some medical researchers as the “Sixth Vital Sign” because of its importance and relation to older adults’ function and mortality. DTP clinicians can intervene with treatment to improve speed, stability, and safety. Evidence shows that increasing walking speed by as little as 0.1 meters/second not only improves independence, but also increases life expectancy. (Studenski et al, 2011)

DECREASING PAIN

A comprehensive plan of care developed by a physical therapist can alleviate and reduce common causes of pain in older adults and improve muscle strength, joint mobility, flexibility, endurance, and circulation. Which, in turn, can enhance the quality of life.

Treating balance and reducing the risk of falls begins with a thorough, client-specific evaluation. Observing clients in their own homes allows therapists to identify issues that may result in falls or potential injury. When exercise is dosed and completed appropriately the risk of falls is dramatically reduced, function is improved, and quality of life can be maximized.
